Faces of Fraternalism: John Kidwell
St. Barbara 2513, Erlanger, Ky.
John has been helping with his parish's youth group for 19 years and counting. The youth group visits a local retirement home monthly to play games and eat dinner with the residents, and every other month they go to the Hosea House to feed the homeless. “Just recently we fed over 200 people!” John exclaimed. In January, a bus of nearly 30 students makes the trek to Washington, D.C. to participate in the March for Life. In June, they go to a camp in Florida to work with inner-city kids. In August, he takes 30 students to Kentucky for a three-day retreat with Franciscan Monks. The activities are a mix of 70% service and 30% fun. He combines youth ministry with COF, saying, “I want the parish to see how much COF really does for our youth.” It’s more than just fellowship activities like Halloween haunted houses and rock climbing—it’s giving back to their community in a very real way that has the power to change the lives of those around them.
