In 1883, a problem arose in Chicago. Families were losing their primary wage earner, often leaving them without food or shelter. Forty-two men noticed this problem in their communities, joined together and chose to act in an attempt to alleviate the suffering of those families that no longer had an income. Each man had one dollar, and they pooled those dollars on a wooden desk. (This desk currently resides in the Home Office in Naperville, Ill.) As a result of this coming together, Catholic Order of Foresters and its first court, Holy Family 1, were born.
